Skilled Trades in Ontario: 4 Technical Career Paths to Explore in 2026

Ontario’s skilled trades cover a wide range of technical careers. From operating CNC machines to servicing residential appliances, these careers require practical skills and technical knowledge.

For someone considering a career change in 2026, the challenge is not simply finding a skilled trade. It is finding a field that matches their interests, abilities and preferred type of work.

At IMTT Canada, we offer programs across a range of technical and skilled-trade areas. In this guide, we are focusing on four career paths that reflect some of the training areas we offer: CNC machining, CNC programming and setup, 3D design with SOLIDWORKS, and appliance service.

CNC machining and machine operation

CNC machining brings together machines, programming and precision manufacturing.

CNC equipment uses programmed instructions to cut and shape materials according to precise measurements. The work involves machine operation, setup, tooling, measurements and technical drawings. It also requires close attention to detail.

For students interested in CNC machining and machine operation, IMTT Canada’s CNC Machine Tool Operator & Programmer program provides training across these core areas.

The 42-week diploma covers:

  • CNC setup, operation and programming
  • Blueprint reading
  • Metrology
  • CNC-related mathematics
  • G-code programming for mills and lathes
  • Mastercam for mills and lathes
  • Multi-axis programming
  • CNC mills and lathes with Fanuc controls
  • CAD/CAM systems

The program includes over 500 hours of hands-on training in a live workshop environment. Students also work with industry-standard software such as Mastercam and SOLIDWORKS. While machine operation focuses heavily on running and monitoring equipment, CNC programming and setup involve preparing the machine, interpreting technical information, and creating or adjusting the instructions used for production.

CNC programming and setup

CNC work is not limited to operating a machine. Programming and setup require a different level of attention. The operator needs to understand the instructions going into the machine, prepare the equipment correctly and work within the required measurements and tolerances.

Our CNC Programmer/Operator/Setup Certificate takes a more focused approach to these skills. The program covers CNC machine setup, operation and programming, along with G-code and M-code, blueprint reading, tooling, offsets, measurements and tolerances.

Students also work with software used in CNC programming and manufacturing. This type of training can suit someone who is interested in the technical side of machining and wants to understand how programming and machine setup work together.

The wider CNC training options at IMTT Canada also include programs focused on CNC mill and lathe setup and CNC mill and lathe operation. This gives students different ways to develop manufacturing skills based on their interests and training goals.

CAD design and digital manufacturing

Before a component can be manufactured, it may first need to be designed, modelled and prepared digitally. CAD software plays an important role in this process.

Our SolidWorks Certificate – Level 1 & Level 2 focuses on 3D CAD design and provides instructor-led training across two levels.

Level 1 covers the foundations of SOLIDWORKS, including:

  • Sketching and 3D sketching
  • Part modelling
  • Features and evaluation tools
  • Assembly modelling
  • Technical drawings

Level 2 builds on those skills with areas such as sheet metal, weldments, configurations, equations, surface modelling and motion studies. The two levels contain 39 hours of training each and are delivered online.

Residential Appliance Troubleshooting, Service and Repair

Household appliances use electrical, refrigeration, water and air systems. When something goes wrong, technicians need to identify the fault, troubleshoot the system and carry out the required service or repair.

Our Appliance Service Technician Certificate Program focuses specifically on these skills.

The 24-week program combines 198 hours of classroom learning with 282 hours of practical training. Students work with industry-standard tools and testing equipment while learning about:

  • Appliance installation and service
  • Electrical systems and controls
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • Refrigeration systems
  • Water and air systems
  • Preventive maintenance and repair
  • Tools and testing equipment
  • Safety practices

The program is offered in a hybrid format, with online learning and in-person practical training at our Mississauga campus.

More technical training options at IMTT Canada

The programs covered here represent only some of the technical training available at IMTT Canada.

Our broader program portfolio also includes Mastercam Training – Level 1 & Level 2, CNC Mill & Lathe Setup Program, and CNC Mill Operator & CNC Lathe Operator, alongside the programs discussed above. View all programs at IMTT Canada.

This wider selection allows students to explore different areas of machining, manufacturing, CAD and technical service instead of following one fixed path.

How to Choose the Right Skilled Trade Program

Choosing a skilled trade takes some research. Look at the program, the training hours and the skills covered before you make a decision. It also helps to compare programs based on the training rather than broad claims about the industry.

A few things are worth checking before you enrol:

  • Review the complete curriculum.
  • Check the practical training hours.
  • Look at the program length.
  • Check the training format.
  • Review the admission requirements.

The right information can make the decision much clearer. Take time to compare your options carefully. Look at the training content and consider the practical experience offered. Choose a program that fits your skills and career plans.
