Ontario Invests $8.6M to Empower Women — IMTT Strengthens CNC Training

Ontario’s skilled trades sector is gaining new momentum — and women are leading the way.
The Government of Ontario has announced an $8.6 million investment to help more women train, apprentice, and build lasting careers in high-demand trades such as CNC machining, construction, welding, and industrial maintenance.

This funding will expand programs that provide hands-on training, mentorship, and job placement for women entering the trades — ensuring equal access to stable, well-paying careers while helping fill Ontario’s growing labour shortage.

Ontario’s Skilled Trades Need More Workers

Across the province, employers continue to face a shortage of qualified tradespeople. Ontario estimates that over 100,000 skilled trade jobs will need to be filled within the next decade, particularly in manufacturing and advanced machining.

To close this gap, the provincial government is funding 14 pre-apprenticeship and training projects that will give women essential skills, tools, and experience to succeed in fields such as CNC machining, automotive manufacturing, and construction.

This initiative not only strengthens Ontario’s economy but also builds a more inclusive and diverse workforce for the future.

Why This Investment Matters for Manufacturing

Manufacturing remains one of Ontario’s most vital industries, employing hundreds of thousands of skilled workers and contributing billions to the economy each year.
Yet, many manufacturers continue to struggle finding trained CNC operators, programmers, and designers to support automation and precision manufacturing.

Encouraging more women to join these fields helps close this critical talent gap. Careers in CNC and advanced manufacturing offer competitive wages, job stability, and long-term growth opportunities for anyone ready to develop technical expertise through certified training.

Women in Skilled Trades: A Growing Opportunity

The $8.6 million investment supports mentorship and workplace training programs that help women gain real-world experience, build confidence, and develop valuable industry connections.

This growing representation of women in the trades marks an important turning point for Ontario’s workforce. More women are stepping into roles as machinists, technicians, and designers — and institutions like IMTT (Institute of Machine Tool Technology) are helping them succeed every step of the way.
